Hundreds of citizens blocked the highway linking the cities of Arish and Rafah in Sinai Monday to demand the arrest of the suspects behind the kidnapping of a girl.

The protesters rallied in front of the North Sinai Governorate building in Arish, causing traffic congestion.

Witnesses said unknown kidnappers took the girl late Sunday and demanded a ransom.

Citizens in Sinai have increasingly protested what they see as a security failure in recent months stemming from numerous armed groups in the region.

Dozens of microbus drivers besieged the Cairo Governorate headquarters on Tuesday, using about 50 microbuses to block the street in front of the building.

Protests by hundreds of drivers caused traffic in a number of streets and squares in Cairo, including Sayeda Aisha and Dar al-Salam squares in the south, Ahmed Helmy Square near downtown and Alf Maskan Square in the north of the city.

The drivers complained about fines imposed by the traffic department, affiliated with the Interior Ministry, for committing traffic violations. They say that they did not commit the violations and accuse the police of fabricating the traffic tickets to collect fines and pass them to high-ranking officers.

Tickets filed against them should be reconsidered, the drivers said, especially those from 2011.

The drivers also called for a solution to the ongoing fuel crisis, greater oversight of gas stations and auto parts shops, the establishment of an independent union for drivers, and organized microbus stations.

In Sayeda Aisha Square, striking drivers chanted, “Oh, justice where are you? The traffic tickets are between you and us,” “Where is the revolution, where are its goals?” and “Bread, freedom and social justice,” as motorists became enraged by the traffic congestion caused by the protest.

In Ahmed Helmy Square, protesters prevented people from boarding government-affiliated buses and threatened to damage cars that attempted to get past.

Khaled al-Gamasy, spokesperson for the nascent Microbus Drivers Union, said that the partial strike was a response to government officials ignoring drivers’ demands. He warned of a full strike in which all public transportation drivers would participate if the demands are not addressed.

The Freedom and Justice Party has announced a new campaign, “Save the President’s Program,” in support of President Mohamed Morsy’s 100-day plan, which aims to solve problems such as traffic, cleanliness and power and water shortages.

The party’s youth members will coordinate with youth from other political parties and Interior Ministry leaders to direct traffic in Giza and Cairo, according to Saad Omara of the party’s Shura Council.

Mokhtar Al-Ashry, head of the FJP’s legal committee, added that other new mechanisms will also be implemented to solve traffic congestion.

Ashry said the party’s initial plan to deal with cleanliness involves increasing the number of trash cans in the streets. Young party members will start cleaning the streets throughout the Cairo and Giza districts next Friday and Saturday.

The campaign will also work on improving and regulating the quality and distribution of bread, and will also coordinate with executive and security entities throughout the governorates to address various other issues.

Calm prevailed on Monday in Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the Egyptian revolution, following two days of mass protests against the verdict in the trial of former President Hosni Mubarak.

Traffic at the square remained blocked for the third consecutive day. Barriers are still set up at the square entrances, and popular committees supervising the entrances are allowing few cars to pass.

A security source told state TV that the closure of the square led to traffic congestion in all downtown streets and those leading to Giza.

A court on Saturday sentenced Mubarak and ex-Interior Minister Habib al-Adly to 25 years in prison, but acquitted six security commanders over the killings of demonstrators during last year’s uprising, which left about 850 people dead.

The ruling sparked outrage across the country, with protesters who took to the streets, furious that no one had been found directly guilty of killing the protesters.

As usual, protesters and passers-by discussed the situation in Tahrir and what the next step should be. Protesters urged passers-by to join them to complete demands and goals of the revolution.

Despite high temperatures, protesters held banners in the square on Sunday and Monday listing their demands, such as suspending the presidential election, forming a presidential council of independents and candidates who did not make it to the election runoff, purging the media and judiciary of corruption, and forming revolutionary courts to publicly try Mubarak-regime figures.

Heavy rains fell on Monday morning in Cairo, Alexandria and the Sinai Peninsula, and snow also fell in some areas.

The rain led to traffic congestion on the highways that link the governorates to each other and those inside the capital, such as 26th of July corridor, Salah Salem Road, the Nile Corniche, and the 6th of October and 15th of May bridges, due to the accumulation of water.

Egyptian Meteorological Authority media adviser Ali Kotb said weather was rainy and cloudy in Cairo, northern governorates and Sinai. However, temperatures remain high.

Hot weather will be felt by noon in Cairo, the Delta and northern areas of Upper Egypt, he added. He expected weather conditions to improve in the afternoon.
