Clashes broke out between police and army officers on Monday evening outside a police department in New Cairo’s Fifth Settlement, said eyewitnesses.

The clashes were allegedly sparked by the army’s intent to avenge a military officer who had a dispute with a police officer on Saturday. The military officer claims that the policeman stopped him on the Cairo-Ismailia Road to check his driver’s license, then took him to the police station and assaulted him.

Eyewitnesses said that on Monday evening the police fired teargas canisters to disperse the army officers who came to protest the alleged assault. Assistant Interior Minister for Cairo Security Osama al-Saghir denied that any teargas had been fired.

Saghir added that around 200 army officers were protesting at the police department demanding justice for their colleague. Saghir said that the Interior Ministry is coordinating with the Armed Forces to contain the crisis.

Security sources said that the leadership of the Cairo Security Directorate went to the police department in the Fifth Settlement to try to convince Armed Forces to disperse.

he Nasr City Misdemeanor Court postponed the trial of seven individuals accused of assaulting the Nasr City police station and a nearby hospital until 5 September. The defense requested the delay to have more time to submit documents.

Prosecutors referred the suspects to trial after investigations suggested that they had thrown stones and empty bottles at the police station’s entrance before vandalizing the hospital. The suspects are accused of rioting, assaulting public servants and damaging public and private property.

Authorities say the attack began when one suspect was engaged in a verbal altercation with a police assistant inside the station, which escalated into a physical assault that left the assistant bruised and injured. When the aggressor was detained, the suspect’s relatives headed to the hospital where the assistant was being treated and vandalized the entrance hall.

A low-ranking police officer was acquitted Tuesday of the charge of attempting to kill seven protesters outside the police station in the Cairo suburb of Moqattam on 28 January 2011, also known as the “Day of Anger.”

During the final hearing of the trial at the Cairo Criminal Court, the lawyer for the defendant, officer Ehab Samy Lofty, said that his client was not present at the police station at the time of the killings, as he was busy securing a peaceful protest in Moqattam’s main square, located some distance from the police station.

The lawyer went on to say that the victims’ statements during the prosecution’s investigation contradicted with statements they gave to the court. He added that there were no eyewitnesses to the incident and that all of the witnesses based their testimony on hearsay.

The victims accused Lofty based on the previous differences between them, as four of the civil rights plaintiffs are registered criminals, the lawyer said. He added that a number of thugs were shooting firearms outside the police station at the time of the incident.

Cairo Criminal Court on Wednesday adjourned to 5 June the case against police officer Ehab Samy Lotfy, who is charged with the attempted murder of seven unarmed protesters outside the Moqattam Police Station on 28 January last year.

The defendant’s legal team said he “was not outside the police station at the time of the events and that he was securing a peaceful protest in Moqattam’s main square far from the station.”

One of his lawyers said statements the victim allegedly made to the prosecution were contradictory and that there were no witnesses to support the prosecution’s case. He added that all of the witnesses’ statements were based on hearsay.

The lawyer alleged that the “victims accused his client because of prior differences between them, as four of the civil rights plaintiffs are registered criminals.”

Low-ranking police officers at Imbaba Police Station have denied the station's chief, Brigadier General Mahmoud Abdallah, entry to the facility following remarks they say he made to media outlets, in which he described the officers as "thugs" and "thieves."

A security source told Al-Masry Al-Youm that Giza Security Chief Major General Salem al-Naghy, asked Abdallah not to go to the police station until the incident is investigated. Abdallah may be transferred to another station.

Abdallah, however, said in a press statement that his remarks were not directed at all police officers, but rather to those who had been sacked for violating rules. He stressed that the Interior Ministry respects all civil servants, and said he hopes lower-ranking officers will have their problems solved in order to resume work.
