Hundreds attended the funeral on Friday for two victims of clashes that took place near the presidential palace on Wednesday between supporters and opponents of President Mohamed Morsy.

The funeral took place after Friday prayers at Al-Azhar Mosque. The independent Youm7 newspaper said that Muslim Brotherhood and Salafi figures led the service.

The protesters in attendance chanted: "We sacrifice our blood and soul for Islam," and "[Egypt] is Islamic, Islamic."

Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie called on people to be patient and accept God's will. The Prophet Mohamed asked people to be patient and serene in troubled times, Badie continued.

"We follow our beloved Prophet Mohamed's instructions and accept God's fate," Badiesd said. He prayed for the victims and their families, and for Egypt to be safe.

The Brotherhood had announced Thursday that there would be a funeral for two Brotherhood members who died during the clashes after Friday prayers.

The clashes began Wednesday after thousands of Brotherhood supporters headed to the presidential palace and broke up a sit-in held by Morsy opponents.

The body of a protester killed in clashes with police arrived in Tahrir Square Monday ahead of his funeral.

About 2,000 people had gathered in the area for the funeral of Gaber Salah, 17, also known as Jika — a member of the April 6 Youth Movement who was killed in clashes with police during commemorations of last year’s Mohamed Mahmoud demonstrations, in which more than 40 people had died.

Crowds chanted “There is no God but Allah.” One sign read, “I believe firmly that these people will always have invisible heroes who feel and sanctify freedom and dignity,” echoing words of former President Gamal Abdel Nasser.

Salah’s family, speaking through a loudspeaker, asked for due respect during the funeral, as well as silence and prayer. His uncle, standing in line to pray for his nephew, asked for people not to chant, saying, “This isn’t a revolution, it’s a funeral.”

But many in the crowd wanted to chant, saying the young man’s death is political and that he was killed at the hands of the Interior Ministry.

Salah died Sunday evening at Qasr al-Aini Hospital. The April 6 Youth Movement had announced the death Salah after he sustained birdshot injuries in the head, chest and right arm during the demonstrations.

Earlier Monday, demonstrators began to gather at the entrance of Mohamed Mahmoud Street from Tahrir Square. Salah had requested that his funeral be held in Tahrir.

Street cleaners cleared stones and bricks on the street left from clashes from between protesters and police over the past few days.

Many TV channel reporters are also present in the square to broadcast the funeral live.

Some attendees of the military funeral at Aal Rashdan Mosque in Nasr City raised their shoes and chanted against President Mohamed Morsy, a Muslim Brotherhood member, accusing him of killing Suleiman.

Suleiman was a longtime intelligence chief and the last vice president under former President Hosni Mubarak

Morsy did not attend the funeral, but sent Presidential Grand Chamberlain Major General Abdel Moemen Fouda in his place.

Head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, his deputy Sami Anan, and Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim attended.

The protesters chanted: "Oh armed forces come from Sinai, the Muslim Brotherhood are slaughtering us," and chanted in support of Tantawi and the armed forces.

A number of public figures also attended the funeral, including former MPs Mostafa Bakry and Mohamed Abu Hamed, Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa, former Minister of Local Development Major General Mohsen al-Noamany, former editor of state-run paper Al-Ahram Osama Saraya, and Major General Hassan al-Rowainy.

Thousands of Copts have arrived at Saint Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church in Abbasseya on Tuesday for the funeral of Pope Shenouda III, who died Saturday after a long struggle with disease.

Citizens and public figures attended the mass, which was scheduled to run from 10 to 11 am. An earlier mass, attended only by priests, was held at 5 am.

After the late morning mass, a military aircraft will transport Shenouda’s body to the fourth century monastery in Wadi al-Natrun, located in the Nile Delta, where Shenouda had asked to be buried.

Before 10 am, hundreds of people had already gathered outside the entrance of the cathedral in an attempt to get in — some had official invitations from the church — but the door was closed. Military and riot police formed a cordon nearby.

Prayers began shortly after 10 am. Thousands of people gathered outside the cathedral to watch the mass on a large screen set up by the church.

“I don’t know who can replace him, he saw everything. But it will be God’s choice,” said Erian Gad, 60, who traveled from Suez with his wife to attend the funeral mass.

“I haven’t absorbed his death yet,” said a woman who traveled from Qena, which is about 600 km away.

The mourners all display a great affection for the late pope.

“He was my father, my life, my love,” Enad Zaghloul, an elderly woman from Cairo, said while weeping. “I’m afraid of the future. We’re living in difficult times.”

She said to herself through her tears: “May the joy, O the sky, be with you, Father.”

Amid an “unprecedented” security plan, police and army forces only allowed a limited number of Copts and some public figures with special invitations to attend the funeral on Monday.

Members of Egypt’s ruling military council and members of the Millet Council — a 24-member secular body in charge of the Coptic Orthodox Church’s administrative affairs — as well as an assortment of political figures and members of Parliament took the front seats.

Among presidential hopefuls in attendance were Amr Moussa, Hamdeen Sabbahi, Abdel Moneim Abouel Fotouh, Ahmed Shafiq and Hesham al-Bastawisi. In addition, prominent Coptic businessman and politician Naguib Sawiris, artist Hany Ramzy, Egyptian Social Democratic Party MP Zyad Elelaimy and activist John Talaat attended.

Some visitors reportedly suffered from breathing problems after scrambling to sit in the front row for the mass.

Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim rejected a request by former head of the Egyptian Federation of Trade Unions to attend the funeral of his
son.

Hussein Megawer is detained pending investigations into the so-called Battle of the Camel, a deadly assault on protesters in Tahrir Square on 2 February last year.

Megawer’s son Mohamed, 31, died after falling from an 11th floor balcony.

Mohamed Megawer is said to have lost his balance and fallen while he was smoking a cigarette, but sources close to the family told Al-Masry Al-Youm that Mohamed was suffering from depression and suggested his death was a suicide.

Former Minister of Interior Mansour al-Essawy previously rejected Megawer's request to attend the funeral of his brother.
