A leading figure in Jama'a al-Islamiya’s Construction and Development Party said Monday that former presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabbahi invited the group for a dialogue.

At a press conference, Safwat Abdel Ghany, who was recently appointed to the Shura Council by President Mohamed Morsy, said the group agreed to the dialogue and informed the Popular Current Party founder of its acceptance.

The group and the party also launched during the press conference an initiative entitled “Dialogue for the Homeland,” which it said is intended to contribute to a better future for the country.

The group called on Morsy to invite all political forces to the dialogue to discuss the articles of the constitution that need to be amended.

“We aim to end the state of polarization between the Islamist forces and the liberal and leftist forces,” said Tarek al-Zomor, the group’s spokesperson. “And we want to put Egypt on the right track.”

In response to a question on reported violations during the constitutional referendum, Zomor said the High Judicial Elections Commission would consider any complaints. “Democracy may be new to us,” he said, “but this does not mean the referendum was rigged deliberately.”

He appealed to all political forces who contributed to the current state of polarization among Egyptians to apologize to the people.

Zomor thanked the Egyptian people for disregarding attempts to incite them to violence and for approving the new constitution. He also thanked the Armed Forces and the police for their role in securing the referendum.

Islamists have postponed demonstrations previously scheduled for Friday demanding Sharia as the main source of legislation in the country’s new constitution.

Jama’a al-Islamiya leader Tarek al-Zomor said in a press conference on Tuesday, aired by Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr, that any reference to Sharia in the constitution should be complete, referring to the draft's current wording that cites the "principles of Sharia" as the main source of Egypt's laws.

Meanwhile, Muslim Brotherhood representative Azab Mostafa said the group does not oppose the demonstration, but prefers to postpone it until the release of the constitution’s final draft. He said that the Brotherhood’s support for applying Sharia is unquestionable.

Jama’a al-Islamiya had declared that it would communicate with other groups calling for demonstrations about their exact demands. The group reportedly claimed that the application of Sharia is a cause that concerns the majority of the Egyptian people.

A member of the Jama’a al-Islamiya Shura Council has said the group has indications about intentions to rig the upcoming presidential election, and that it made plans to prevent fraud by protecting the polling stations.

“We’ve been informed through our sources that there will be rigging of the presidential elections. It might take place inside the polling stations or while announcing the results,” Tarek al-Zomor told Al-Masry Al-Youm. “The group drew up a plan along with other political forces that depends on public mobilization of people, not only for voting, but also for protecting polling stations and boxes.”

“We seek to mobilize all segments of the society to defend their will correctly. If what we fear happens, we would stage a second revolution that leaves none of the remnants, purges society and avoids the disadvantages of the first revolution,” Zomor said.

Zomor said the group agreed with presidential hopeful Abdel Moneim Abouel Fotouh on allowing the parliamentary majority to form the new government in case he became president, without letting his conflict with the Muslim Brotherhood be a reason for not letting it form the government.

Zomor also warned against the victory of presidential candidate Amr Moussa, saying this would spark another revolution because Moussa was considered a Mubarak regime figure. Moussa’s winning would lead the country backward, Zomor said.

The group’s Shura Council will meet on Wednesday to discuss several issues, including the clashes in Abbasseya last week, supporting Abouel Fotouh and possibilities of participating in a protest planned for Friday.
