Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood has formed a committee to support the Syrian uprising, led by Mohamed Abdel Rahman, a member of the Guidance Bureau.

Its mission is to document the revolution in the media, find supporters for the Free Syrian Army (FSA), and assist refugees and displaced Syrians.

“We will provide full and consistent support for the Syrian revolution,” said Saad al-Khalifa, a member of the Brotherhood's Shura Council.

Syrian activist Farhan Matar said all the support that has been promised for the Syrian revolution is "mere talk."

The Muslim Brotherhood did not send members to Syria to join the FSA and fight against President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, group spokesperson Mahmoud Ghozlan told the pan-Arab newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat on 14 September.

Bassam al-Dada, the Free Syrian Army's political adviser, estimated the same month that around 20 Egyptians total had joined the Syrian opposition forces.

The Muslim Brotherhood did not send members to Syria to join the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and fight against President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, group spokesperson Mahmoud Ghozlan declared on Friday.

Ghozlan reaffirmed the Brotherhood’s commitment to the Syrian revolution and the group’s support of the Syrian people fighting the regime, but also denied reports that the MB had supplied the FSA with weapons.

Rumors regarding alleged Brotherhood-FSA connections began circulating when last week a member of the Freedom and Justice Party claimed that his cousin had joined the FSA last month and was recently killed while fighting against pro-Assad troops.

There are currently no accurate reports indicating the number of Egyptians who have joined the FSA, but there has been widespread support for the Syrian uprising in Egypt at both the popular and official levels. President Mohamed Morsy has often affirmed Egypt’s support of the Syrian people in public speeches.

On Saturday, the Turkish Anadolu news agency quoted Bassam al-Dada, the FSA’s political adviser, as saying that 20 Egyptians had joined the Syrian opposition forces. He told the news agency that the FSA currently had 200 members hailing from other Arab countries.

Dada said that the FSA closely monitors who joins their ranks in order to sure that they are not infiltrated by Al-Qaeda.

The Morsy administration has not officially commented on their position regarding Egyptians fighting with the FSA. However, some members of the Muslim Brotherhood did object to calls made by other Islamist groups to send Egyptian fighters to Syria.

Assem Abdel Maged, media official at Jama'a al-Islamiya, told Al-Masry Al-Youm last month that a group of jihadists were ready to travel to Syria to join the rebels in an attempt to overthrow Assad.

He also told the independent daily Al-Watan that three Egyptians affiliated to the group had died in battle in Syria.

Former Freedom and Justice Party MP Nasser Abbas has said that his cousin, Abu Bakr Ibrahim Moussa, who joined the Free Syrian Army a month ago, died during an encounter with the Syrian government forces in the city of Aleppo.

Abbas said that Ibrahim worked as a lecturer at the British Council, and had formerly participated in relief efforts in Libya during the war against former leader Muammar Qadhafi.

On Saturday, the Turkish Anadolu news agency quoted Bassam al-Dada, the Free Syrian Army's political adviser, as saying that 20 Egyptians had joined the Syrian opposition forces. He told the news agency that the number of fighters joining the Free Syrian Army from Arab countries in general stood at 200 people.

Dada said those fighters had not declared their affiliations, and explained that they had taken the initiative to support the Syrian revolution. He said that the FSA gives much attention to the phenomenon to ensure that it is not infiltrated by elements from Al-Qaeda.

No official comment was made from Egypt on local press reports concerning the participation of Egyptians in the fight against the Syrian regime. Some within the Muslim Brotherhood’s leadership had voiced opposition to calls by some Islamist groups to send Egyptian fighters to Syria.

Assem Abdel Maged, media official at Jama'a al-Islamiya, told Al-Masry Al-Youm last month that a group of jihadists were ready to travel to Syria to join the rebels in an attempt to overthrow Assad.

He also told independent daily Al-Watan that three Egyptians affiliated to the group had died in battle in Syria.

Clashes broke out between security forces, Syrian activists and a number of street vendors on Wednesday in Tahrir Square after security attempted to disperse a protest in front of the Arab League headquarters, where President Morsy was scheduled to deliver a speech.

No injuries were reported in the clashes.

Security broke up the protest staged by Syrian activists and took down the tent they had erected in the middle of the square.

Authorities have arrested 14 people who they said were involved in the clashes that broke out on Tuesday afternoon in front of the Syrian Embassy in Garden City, and led to the injury of security officials and protesters.

A security source said two policemen and seven conscripts were injured in the clashes.

Political activists had marched on Tuesday from Tahrir to the embassy to condemn the killing of Syrian revolutionaries and to call for the expulsion of the Syrian ambassador in Egypt.

Fighting erupted after the protesters attempted to break into the embassy and raise the Syrian revolution's flag on its building.

The Ministry of Health said on Tuesday that 33 victims fell during the clashes and that they are all in stable condition.

Various Egyptian political figures spoke positively of President Mohamed Morsy’s speech at the Non-Aligned Movement Summit in the Iranian capital of Tehran on Thursday.

In his speech, Morsy told the member states that they should support the Syrian revolution against President Bashar al-Assad, who Morsy called a tyrant who has lost legitimacy. He also called for a purely civilian state in Syria, and to support the students of the Freedom and Justice Party in Syria in order for the country to move toward a democratic system and prevent a civil war or sectarian clashes in the future.

The speech caused the Syrian delegation to withdraw from the conference, but was praised at home.

Liberal and former MP Amr Hamzawy said on his Twitter, "Solidarity with the Syrian revolution and pressure on dictators is Egypt’s duty.”

Engy Hamdy of the April 6 Youth Movement said the speech proved Morsy has a vision shaped by revolutionary demands.

Nader Bakkar, spokesperson of the Salafi Nour Party, said on his Twitter that Morsy should be welcomed like a champion upon his arrival back in Cairo.

Mohamed Abou Hamed, the former parliamentarian who led demonstrations demanding the toppling of Morsy on 24 August, also praised the speech and saluted the president on his Twitter.

Hafez Abu Seada, head of the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights, said the speech dashed any hopes for Iran to lead the region in an alliance with Egypt.

Activists, politicians, media figures and doctors in Egypt have launched a campaign to offer the Syrian people moral and financial support against the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

The Doctors Syndicate announced Thursday in a conference that its sub-headquarters will receive donations for the Syrian people.

The campaign’s coordinator, Bassam al-Dowaihy, called for withdrawing legitimacy from the Assad regime and putting all regime figures on trial at the International Court of Justice for crimes against humanity.

Dowaihy stressed that the UN should seek the evacuation of wounded people from Syrian hospitals before crimes are committed against them in Syrian prisons. He demanded that the Egyptian authorities expel the Syrian ambassador, although Syria removed its ambassador in mid-February in response to Cairo’s decision to recall Egypt’s ambassador to Syria.

"We are counting on Al-Azhar to intervene and call for ending the bloodshed," Dowaihy said. Al-Azhar’s envoy to the conference stressed that Al-Azhar supports the Syrian people.

Dowaihy went on to accuse Iran and Hezbollah of attempting to implement a Shia plan in the Arab region that starts from Syria.

Al-Hewar satellite channel head Azam al-Temaimy said a number of media personnel have adopted a negative stance on the Syrian revolution, despite their support for the Tunisian and Egyptian revolutions. He described the situation in Syria as catastrophic and demanded that the international community take a quick steps to aid civilians in Syria.

The Syrian woman is an icon for the Syrian revolution, said former Freedom and Justice Party MP Azza al-Garf, who called on Morsy and the Egyptian people to offer Syrians support. She added that Assad’s fate will be like that of other toppled Arab dictators.

Egyptian youth activist Moaz Abdel Karim called on Egyptians to offer financial aid and media support to Syrians and to establish field hospitals on the Syrian borders to treat the injured.
