Mubarak injured after fall

A security source in the Prisons Authority said that former President Hosni Mubarak fell in the bathroom of his hospital room, which led to a head injury and bruising, the state news agency MENA reported.

The source told MENA that the medical team supervising Mubarak's condition attended to him right away.

Mubarak is currently serving a life sentence in Tora prison hospital for not preventing the murder of protesters during the 25 January revolution.

“Infiltrators” may try to penetrate protests Tuesday, the Interior Ministry warned in a statement Monday.

A security source said in the statement that the police would protect state institutions and public and private property in accordance with the provisions of the constitution and the law.

The source pledged that security forces would not approach the demonstrators as long as they protest peacefully.

Several marches will start at different parts in Cairo Tuesday afternoon and are expected to converge at the presidential palace at Heliopolis to protest the final draft of the new constitution, which is widely criticized over human rights issues, the electoral system and the absence of protections for women’s rights.

Jama’a al-Islamiya and its Construction and Development Party have warned the political forces calling for the “Last Warning” demonstration of using the event to spread chaos and “thuggery.”

In a statement on Monday, the party alleged that, “Someone is trying to exploit these demonstrations to spread chaos, assault government institutions and clash with the Republican Guard in an attempt to overthrow President Mohamed Morsy and reinstate the former regime.”

The statement called on “citizens who support legitimacy” to form popular committees to support the police in protecting public and private property.

They also called on the Coptic Church to keep the demonstration peaceful, as Coptic groups have announced their participation. Liberal and secular political parties, journalists and trade union members are also expected to take part in the demonstration.

The West Alexandria Prosecution approved on Monday Sabry “Nakhnoukh” Helmy’s request to be taken to a hospital for heart treatment, while a security source warned that this may be a plot for his escape and flight from Egypt.

Nakhnoukh’s lawyer filed the request with the prosecution on Monday, saying Nakhnoukh suffers from heart problems. The lawyer attached a report from the prison doctor stating that Nakhnoukh has heart palpitations and a blood pressure disorder.

Nakhnoukh, according to the report, had previously undergone open heart surgery, and the prison doctor recommended that he be transferred to an intensive care unit in a hospital outside the prison. Nakhnoukh will be taken to the East City Hospital in the Sidi Beshr area of Alexandria.

A security source at the Alexandria Security Directorate claimed that the request to transfer Nakhnoukh was the beginning of an escape attempt.

The source added that policemen cannot guard rooms in the intensive care unit, so there would be no way to prevent Nakhnoukh from escaping.

Major General Abdel Mawgoud Lotfy, head of the Alexandria Security Directorate, ordered five Central Security units to secure the entrances and exits of the hospital in preparation for Nakhnoukh’s arrival.

Nakhnoukh would be examined by specialists to determine whether he should be admitted to the intensive care unit or not.

The number of people arrested since the beginning of clashes on Mohamed Mahmoud Street last week has now reached 348, according to a security source in Cairo.

The source added that 216 policemen have also been injured, claiming 26 were injured by birdshot.

Prosecutors have decided to hold 109 suspects, while releasing 165 others and turning over 74 juveniles to their families.

Those still being held have been accused by prosecutors of assaulting security services personnel and damaging public installations.

Clashes broke out 19 November between protesters and security forces during a commemoration of similar clashes that took place in November, 2011 when security forces forcibly clear Tahrir Square of demonstrators protesting against the formerly ruling Supreme Council of Armed Forces. At least 40 people were killed in the clashes.

As of Monday, 329 protesters have been detained on charges of rioting during clashes with security forces on Mohamed Mahmoud Street and Qasr al-Aini Street, said a security source.

Ninety of those detained have been formally arrested and are facing legal charges, the source told state-owned news source MENA. Another 74 protesters who were under the age of 18 were released to relatives, and another 165 detainees were released without charge.

The source also claimed that 199 police officers have been injured in the clashes.

Violent confrontations have been taking place between protesters and security forces on the streets around the Interior Ministry for the past 10 days. The two groups began hurling stones and Molotov cocktails at each other on the first day of the commemoration of the 2011 Mohamed Mahmoud clashes.

The violence escalated on Friday, the day after President Mohamed Morsy issued a new constitutional declaration that granted him unprecedented powers and made his rulings legally uncontestable.

Four injured in Sinai blast

Four people were injured in a blast at a partially constructed building belonging to the Central Security Forces in Sinai, a security source said Sunday

The blast took place at 1 am and targeted a police station under construction in the Qaseema area of central Sinai, according to the source, who added that four workers inside were injured.

The source added that powerful explosives were placed inside by unknown assailants, and that the building was being built for police and security forces guarding the gas pipeline to Jordan.

Another blast targeting an under-construction building for the intelligence services took place in the Safa area in Rafah late on Saturday. No casualties were reported

Armed Forces personnel went to the scene of the blast to check for more explosives, and were still inspecting the scene at the time of reporting.

The motive behind the attack is unknown.

Unknown assailants have been mounting attacks in Sinai against security installations since August, when gunmen killed 16 Egyptian soldiers at a military checkpoint near the Israeli border.

An Israeli strike destroyed houses on the Egyptian side of the border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip Monday.

A security source said that Israeli F-16 fired missiles at tunnels and houses adjacent to the border.

“The armed forces stopped filling the tunnels due to the missile attack on the tunnels area,” the source added.

Security officials suggested that local residents in the area leave their homes; however the residents refused, fearing their houses would be broken into.

In related news, a Palestinian who was being treated in Arish Public Hospital died from injuries he sustained during the Israeli attack on Gaza. The body was transferred to Gaza via the Rafah border crossing.

Militants fired on a Central Security Forces camp in Arish, North Sinai Monday morning, fleeing into the desert when security forces fired back.

No casualties were reported.

A security source said this was the second attack on security forces in 24 hours, adding that the forces combed the desert but could not find the gunmen.

Sinai has seen intermittent clashes between security forces and militants since early August when 16 Egyptian soldiers were killed by unidentified gunmen in Rafah.

Three more policemen were killed in another attack on a police patrol in the Gisr al-Wadi district in Arish early last week, prompting the police to protest for better equipment to defend themselves.
