Security forces uncovered dozens of missiles and explosives in a stock room in the Dar al-Salam district of Cairo, security sources said on Friday.

The weapons included two rocket-propelled grenade missiles, 10 mortar missiles, 61 anti-aircraft missiles, 28 projectiles and 22 explosives.

The owner of an unlicensed foundry confessed to the police that he had bought the weapons from a scrap stockyard in the Abu Regeila neighborhood, and that they had been discarded by the Armed Forces in Suez. Security forces went to the stockyard in question and arrested the security guard there. They also seized more weapons found onsite.

A police report was filed and the prosecution conducted initial investigations. Prosecutors ordered the arrest of the owner of the stockyard, whose whereabouts are unkown.

In October, security forces raided a flat in the Nasr City neighborhood, killed an alleged terrorism suspect and seized a number of sophisticated weapons.

There have been several reports of arms smuggling across the border with Libya in recent months.

Four military and policemen participating in the military crackdown “Operation Eagle” were injured in Sinai when gunmen fired an RPG at their armored vehicle on their way back to Arish on Saturday, AFP quoted an Egyptian security official as saying.

The security officials were quoted as saying that militants fired a rocket-propelled grenade at a security convoy in Sinai, wounding three military officers and a policeman.

The campaign had broken into three houses in the village of Sidot in Rafah, arresting two suspects, while the third managed to escape.

The militants attacked the policemen near the town of Sheikh Zuwayid, roughly 15 km west of the border with Gaza, as they were returning from an operation, the official said.

The security officials said soldiers and policemen had earlier arrested two Islamist militants near the divided town of Rafah on the Egypt-Gaza border.

The troops were returning from a raid on the homes of suspected militants and had arrested two people.

Security forces launched a campaign to crush increasingly brazen Islamist militants in the restive peninsula after an attack on an army outpost killed 16 soldiers on 5 August.

The government has always struggled with militancy and smuggling in the region, but it lost its grip after an uprising overthrew president Hosni Mubarak early last year, prompting the collapse of his discredited police force and allowing militants to flourish.

A group of unidentified men on Thursday morning bombed Sheikh Zuwayed Mausoleum, near the Egyptian city of Rafah on the border with Israel.

The blast completely destroyed the mausoleum, which had already been severely damaged by two previous attacks — a bombing in May last year followed by a rocket-propelled grenade attack in August.

Sheikh Zuwayed, for whom the mausoleum is named, was a Sufi preacher who entered Egypt during the Islamic conquest and lived in North Sinai.

A report of the incident was filed and it has been referred for investigation.

Despite the recurrent bombings, Egyptian security services have not arrested any suspects.

In August, Alaa Abul Azayem, a Sufi sheikh and founder of the Egyptian Liberation Party, accused Salafis of perpetrating the attacks.

Relations between Salafis and Sufis have been particularly tense since the outbreak of the 25 January revolution.

Some Salafi preachers believe Sufis are atheists, a charge that has prompted some Salafis to attack Sufi shrines and lankmarks.

Authorities found a large amount of ammunition, heavy-weapon projectiles and rocket-propelled grenades on a mountainous route in Fayed, located northeast of Cairo.

Fayed Investigation Police Department had received information that a group of Bedouin men had prohibited firearms and ammunition that they hid in the Desert Mountains, according to an Interior Ministry statement released Monday.

Two rocket-propelled grenade shells, 44 bullets for a Belgian-made automatic gun and 275 heavy-weapon projectiles were found in a wicker hut, police said.

Authorities took all legal actions necessary and referred the incident to the prosecution, according to the statement.

Media outlets have reported that weapon smuggling across the Egypt-Libya border has increased since the overthrow and killing of Libyan leader Muammar Qadhafi last year.

In May, security forces confiscated 40 ground-to-ground missiles and 17 rocket-propelled grenades, potentially for use in attacking armored vehicles and tanks.
