Salafi leader Hazem Salah Abu Ismail has called on his supporters to cancel a planned march on Dokki police station at 7 pm, in an apparent attempt to defuse a confrontation between his supporters and police that had led officers to form a massive phalanx in front of the station by the early afternoon.

News reports on Saturday indicated that supporters of Abu Ismail, also known as the Hazemoun, had attacked the liberal Wafd Party headquarters in Dokki. Police had fired into the air to disperse protesters before gathering in front of the headquarters. Afterward, Wafd chief Al-Sayed al-Badawy blamed the Hazemoun movement for the attack.

The Interior Ministry said Sunday it was pursuing those who behind the attack, but not Abu Ismail.

In a statement, the ministry said it has tracked down the attackers and found them near Abu Ismail’s office in Dokki, and denied rumors that it was targeting him personally.

The Hazemoun had gathered in front of Assad Ibn al-Furat Mosque by late afternoon Sunday. They are reportedly preparing to march on the Dokki police station to protest what Abu Ismail has called “old police practices.”

In an Facebook post before calling on his supporters to cancel the march, Abu Ismail had written; “Today at 7 pm, we’ll head to the Dokki police station to know what happened,” referring to his belief at the time that the Interior Ministry had identified him and his supporters as the perpetrators behind the attacks.

Abu Ismail has denied that he incited the attack in several phone calls to television shows, and threatened to sue whoever tied his name to the incident.

Abu Ismail had emerged as one of the frontrunners for the first presidential vote since the fall of Hosni Mubarak, but the high elections commission barred him from running after it learned that his late mother had a US passport, a status that disqualified him from the race.

Four injured in Sinai blast

Four people were injured in a blast at a partially constructed building belonging to the Central Security Forces in Sinai, a security source said Sunday

The blast took place at 1 am and targeted a police station under construction in the Qaseema area of central Sinai, according to the source, who added that four workers inside were injured.

The source added that powerful explosives were placed inside by unknown assailants, and that the building was being built for police and security forces guarding the gas pipeline to Jordan.

Another blast targeting an under-construction building for the intelligence services took place in the Safa area in Rafah late on Saturday. No casualties were reported

Armed Forces personnel went to the scene of the blast to check for more explosives, and were still inspecting the scene at the time of reporting.

The motive behind the attack is unknown.

Unknown assailants have been mounting attacks in Sinai against security installations since August, when gunmen killed 16 Egyptian soldiers at a military checkpoint near the Israeli border.

Cairo Criminal Court acquitted Thursday police officers Ahmed Mostafa al-Shazly and Khaled Abu Raid of killing five protesters and injuring seven others last year.

The officers were found not guilty of shooting revolution protesters outside the Darb al-Ahmar police station on 28 January 2011.

The defense lawyer argued the charges were false and based on malicious motives. Their attorney claimed criminals in the district made up the allegations out of hostility toward Shazly after his 11 years on the police force. He suggested that the protesters may have been killed by unknown gunmen who infiltrated the demonstrations.

The mother of Ahmed Khalifa, one of the protesters shot dead, burst in to tears when the verdict was announced.

"I was sure they would acquit the defendants. We will see what President [Mohamed] Morsy will do with them," she said.

According to the defense, Shazly was stationed at the Cairo Security Department on the day of the killings and Abu Raid was securing Al-Azhar Mosque during Friday prayers that day. Brigadier General Ahmed Helmy, Captain Mohamed Fawzy and Captain Ahmed Kilany all provided testimony corroborating Shazly’s alibi.

The lawyer also said the killed and injured protesters had been violent and tried to burn down the police station.

Army, police face off again

For the second time in a week, army officers faced off Wednesday with police forces. Forces from the military police and navy on Wednesday evening surrounded the Montazah Police department in Alexandria for an hour to release a navy officer who was detained inside for fighting with a police detective.

Eyewitnesses said the fight began when the police stopped the navy officer to ask for his ID card and driver’s license, and that he called his friends to come to his rescue when he was taken to the police station, but no clashes erupted between the two sides.

The military prosecution is currently investigating a similar incident which occurred in New Cairo’s Fifth Settlement on Monday. Clashes that broke out between police and army officers Monday evening were ended the same night.

The clashes were allegedly sparked by the army’s intent to avenge a military officer who had a dispute with a police officer on Saturday. The military officer claims that the policeman stopped him on the Cairo-Ismailia Road to check his driver’s license, then took him to the police station and assaulted him.

Eyewitnesses said that on Monday evening the police fired teargas canisters to disperse the army officers who came to protest the alleged assault. Assistant Interior Minister for Cairo Security Osama al-Saghir denied that any teargas was fired.

Military spokesperson Ahmed Mohamed Ali said the confrontation was “incidental” and that the police and the army are partners in securing the country.

Members of youth and political groups in the city of Mahalla in the Nile Delta governorate of Gharbiya besieged a police station on Tuesday evening, chanting slogans denouncing the Interior Ministry and the Muslim Brotherhood and demanding the overthrow of President Mohamed Morsy and retribution for victims of the Mohamed Mahmoud Street violence.

They also demanded the dismissal of Hesham Qandil’s Cabinet and bring to trial those responsible for the Assiut train accident that killed over 50 children on Saturday. They said they would continue to demonstrate until their demands are met, and warned President Morsy of a revolution that would topple him.

Clashes broke out in downtown Cairo Monday evening after security forces used tear gas to disperse protesters and prevent them from approaching the Interior Ministry.

The clashes came during a rally marking the first anniversary of the Mohamed Mahmoud Street clashes in November 2011, during which over 40 people were killed after police and security forces forcibly cleared Tahrir Square of protesters demonstrating against the then-ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.

The Military Prosecution plans to investigate the clashes that erupted between police and army officers in New Cairo’s Fifth Settlement police department on Monday, sources at the attorney general’s office said Tuesday.

The sources added that the prosecution would conduct an investigation into the dispute on Saturday between an army officer and a policeman on Cairo-Ismailia road.

The military officer claims that the policeman stopped him to check his driver’s license, then took him to the police station and assaulted him.

About 60 of the army officer’s friends and colleagues gathered on Monday outside the police department. They clashed with the police, who threw teargas canisters to disperse them.

A meeting was held between the leaders of the Armed Forces and the Interior Ministry to resolve the matter amicably.

Military spokesperson Ahmed Mohamed Ali announced Monday night that the clashes between police and army officers were brought under control after Central Military Zone Commander Major Tawhid Tawfiq Abdel Sami and the commanders of the Military Police and the commando forces went to the Fifth Settlement to resolve the situation, with the help of the Interior Ministry.

Ali said the confrontation was “incidental” and that the police and the army are partners in securing the country.

Security authorities on Monday arrested a street vendor accused of assaulting a German man over the price of a cup of tea, state news agency MENA reported.

The German citizen, identified by MENA as Jan, filed a report at Qasr al-Nil Police Station and said he was taking a walk in Tahrir Square when he had a fight with a street vendor over the price of a cup of tea. Jan said the vendor beat him, wounding him in his left thigh and knee, then fled.

A sketch of the suspect was drawn using Jan’s description of his alleged attacker, and authorities arrested him. The suspect was found to have been charged in two other cases.

MENA said the man confessed to the attack and was referred to the Public Prosecution for investigation.
