Hussein Salem has offered to return assets he amassed illegally in exchange for the cancellation of court rulings against him and his sons, state-run newspaper Al-Ahram quoted anonymous governmental sources as saying.

Salem, who fled to Spain during the uprising that ousted former President Hosni Mubarak, has been in negotiation with the government for the past few days to reach an agreement over the funds, Al-Ahram added.

Salem offered to pay LE2 billion, the sources said, but the Cabinet has not approved his offer.

Salem faces accusations of tax evasion and money laundering. In June, the Salem and former Petroleum Minister Sameh Fahmy were sentenced to 15 years in prison for their role in Egypt's gas deal with Israel.

The Spanish Supreme Court has ordered Salem’s extradition to Egypt, rejecting his request for asylum on the basis that the charges against him are politically motivated.

The Spanish Supreme Court in Spain Wednesday ruled in favor of a previous court order to extradite businessman Hussein Salem to Egypt. Salem faces accusations of tax evasion and money laundering, and was sentenced in June to 15 years in prison for his role in Egypt's gas deal with Israel.

The court rejected Salam's request to cancel the extradition based on his Spanish citizenship. He claimed that the charges he faced in Egypt were political rather than criminal, and his lawyer demanded that the court consider the "revolutionary situation" in Egypt.

Salem and his children are charged with several crimes, including money laundering in collaboration with the former president.

Salem, a close personal friend of ousted President Hosni Mubarak, fled Egypt on 3 February, eight days before Mubarak stepped down. He was arrested in Madrid in last June for his alleged involvement in money laundering. His son Khaled and daughter Magda were arrested on related charges last July.

In January, the Spanish National Court in Madrid agreed to extradite Magda Salem to Egypt.

Cyprus said Tuesday it was investigating whether ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak stashed away ill-gotten gains in secret accounts on the island.

Justice Minister Loucas Louca said a special unit called Mokas, which is tasked with combating financial crime and money laundering, was handling the issue.

"We don't go around doing investigations on our own willy-nilly," Louca told reporters when asked about the issue.

"A specific request comes to us from a country. There is an investigation underway to locate evidence of assets in banks but it's not that simple."

He said a search had to be done at the registrar of companies to see if there were companies on the island that belong to "these people."

The minister did not elaborate.

According to local media, an Egyptian delegation was in Cyprus last week to track down state funds allegedly siphoned from Egypt to the island during the 30-year rule of Mubarak.

Reportedly, proceedings have been launched in Cyprus against four companies in a bid to find assets connected to the former regime.

Egyptian authorities have visited various European countries to follow the money trail of millions of dollars allegedly stashed in secret accounts.

A team met officials from the justice ministry and Mokas in a search for evidence against Mubarak-era figures.

"The meeting went very well. It was very productive. The Cyprus government is giving full support," Egyptian Ambassador Menha Mahrous Bakhoum told the Cyprus Mail on Sunday.

"There is nothing concrete yet. We are investigating," she added.

Switzerland and Britain have already frozen an estimated 445 million euros worth of assets linked to former regime figures.

The Spanish Supreme Court has approved the extradition of Egyptian businessman Hussein Salem, his son Khaled and daughter Magda to Egypt.

It confirmed a verdict issued by another Spanish court in March to extradite Salem and his children for their retrial over charges of money laundering, seizing state lands and exporting natural gas to Israel at low prices.

Assistant Minister of Justice Asim al-Gohary said he received a phone call from the international law firm that represents Egypt saying the court issued its decision Friday.

Gohary added that the committee formed to recover the money smuggled abroad will arrange the reception of the three suspects.

The Illicit Gains Office will interrogate Salem over charges of corruption and exporting gas to Israel at low prices.

A close friend of Hosni Mubarak, Salem fled to Spain during Egypt's 25 January uprising last year. After Mubarak's resignation, Egypt called on Interpol to arrest Salem for bribery, abuse of power, and squandering public money. He was then monitored by the Spanish government, which found evidence implicating him in money laundering in Spain.

On 10 October 2011, the Spanish secretary of state announced that Spain intended to hand Salem, who has both Egyptian and Spanish citizenship, to the Egyptian authorities for trial on charges of corruption.

Salem was tried in absentia at Cairo's Criminal Court. The court is also considering the case of Mubarak's corruption, and is scheduled to issue a verdict on 2 June.

The Cairo Criminal Court has postponed until 6 May the trial of Ahmed Ezz, the now-disbanded National Democratic Party secretary, for money laundering due to the bad health of his lawyer, Farid al-Deeb.

Ezz’s defense team submitted a request that the trial be postponed as Deeb is currently in Paris receiving treatment for angina pectoris. The request said his condition would prevent him attending Sunday’s session. The team attached a copy of a medical report.

Ezz is accused of laundering around LE6,429,000,000 gained from profiteering and embezzling public money.

Prosecutors say Ezz used part of the money to establish companies under his name and those of his wife and sons. Through those he allegedly made several bank transactions to his personal bank account and those of his companies abroad.

Ezz, a steel tycoon and a close associate of the ousted president’s son, Gamal Mubarak, was sentenced in September 2011 to 10 years in prison for illegally obtaining licenses for steel plants.

Deeb is also defending former President Hosni Mubarak, who is charged with killing protesters during the 25 January uprising and awaits a court ruling scheduled be issued on 2 June.

Deeb was rumored to have fled the country when he traveled to France in January for a heart check-up, but he denied the rumours.

Judicial authorities in Spain have decided to extradite Magda Salem, the daughter of runaway Egyptian businessman Hussein Salem, who faces corruption charges both in Egypt and Spain.

In mid-January, a Spanish court said it would investigate whether to extradite Magda, who faces charges of money laundering in Egypt.

The elder Salem fled with his family to Spain during Egypt’s 25 January uprising last year, which prompted the resignation of former President Hosni Mubarak, to whom Salem was a close associate.

After Mubarak’s resignation, Egypt called on Interpol to arrest Salem on charges of bribery, abuse of power and squandering public money.

Salem is also a primary suspect in corruption charges related to the Egypt-Israel natural gas deal, which also involves the toppled president. He faces charges of money laundering in Spain as well.

In late February, Spain said it will hand over Salem and his son, Khaled, to Egypt, and would consider the status of his daughter, Magda.
