Gas explosion injures six at popular Alexandria restaurant

Six people, including two rescue workers, were seriously injured Monday when four gas cylinders exploded in a popular restaurant in Miami, east of Alexandria.

Police found that a gas leak from one canister at Abu Rabia Restaurant had caused the fire, which was followed by a chain of explosions. Emergency responder Emad Kheir said the blaze is under control and has been prevented from extending.

Those injured were taken to a hospital for treatment. Prosecution services ordered a forensic inspection to determine the reason behind the fires.

Oil leaks for eighth time since September in Gamsha Bay

Environmental teams and the General Petroleum Authority declared a state of emergency after another oil spill in Gamsha Bay, north of Hurghada.

An onshore and offshore spill occurred last Monday and was contained, but yesterday another spill came from the same leak.

The operations and emergency center in Red Sea Governorate received information about an oil spill covering a total surface area of 300 to 400 square meters. Environmental teams were dispatched to address the problem.

Authorities took several measures to clean up the spill.

The spill last Monday resulted from a leak at a General Petroleum Company well that emitted large quantities of toxic hydrogen sulfide gas.

That was the seventh spill since September.

The Environment Ministry fined the company LE2 million following a gas leak in the same area in October.

Fire at Alexandria company leaves worker dead

A maintenance worker at Abu Qir Company for Fertilizers in Alexandria died after a fire broke out at the company due to a gas leak.

Major General Khaled Ghoraba, Alexandria’s security chief, was notified about the death of the worker, 38-year-old Hany Abdel Fattah Ahmed.

Medical examiners found burns on Abdel Fattah’s chest.

Alaa Hassan, 30, a technician in the company, said the gas leaked and a fire broke out while Ahmed had been doing maintenance work on the gas pipes.

Ahmed’s body was transferred to the morgue and a police report was filed. Prosecutors will conduct investigations.
