A misdemeanor court in Qalyubiya sentenced former MP Ali Wanees on Saturday to a year and a half in prison for indecency and resisting the authorities. Alternatively he can pay a fine of LE1,000, MENA reported.

The woman arrested with him, Nesreen Ramadan Abdel Aaty, received a sentence of six months in prison or a fine of LE500.

In June police apprehended Wanees, who was a Salafi Asala Party member of the People's Assembly before it was dissolved, for allegedly committing an obscene act with university student Abdel Aaty in his car on the agricultural road in the city of Tokh.

Wanees has since gone missing.

He denied any wrongdoing and said in a video posted on his website that he had parked on the side of the road because his passenger had become sick.

Qalyubiya police department imposed tight security measures in preparation for the sentencing, including a security cordon around the court.

Attendance was limited to lawyers, Abdel Aaty's relatives and the media, due to fears that a large number of Salafis and supporters of the MP would attend, as happened at the previous court session.

The Salafi party was already hit by a scandal in March when another lawmaker was forced to resign from Parliament and from his party after claiming he was injured in a carjacking -— to explain bandages on his face -— when in fact he had had a nose job.

The trial of former MP Ali Wanees, who is accused of indecency, was postponed Sunday by the Tokh Misdemeanor Court to 15 July so evidence can be considered.

In June police apprehended Wanees, who was a Salafi Asala Party member of the People's Assembly before it was dissolved, for allegedly committing an obscene act with university student Nesreen Ramadan Abdel Aaty in his car on the agricultural road in the city of Tokh.

Public Prosecutor Abdel Meguid Mahmoud referred the two suspects to trial on Thursday after Wanees refused to attend questioning and the authorities failed to re-arrest him. Wanees did not attend the trial’s first session.

Abdel Aaty, 23, who was arrested pending investigation, stood in the defendants' cage under high security due to fears of attacks by her family.

Mahmoud Youssef, the lawyer defending Wanees, had requested the trial be postponed so the documents could be reviewed.

The documents being reviewed include an expert's report apparently proving that the woman's voice is similar to that recorded in videos police took when they arrested her, and the testimony of the only witness, a Reham Ramadan Zaky.

Hossam Habeeb, the lawyer defending Abdel Aaty, requested an official copy of the documents and asked that his client be released. He said there is no evidence against her and called for a ban on reporting on the trial until a verdict is issued.

Banha Prosecutor Ahmed Lotfy al-Deeb has ordered the arrest of former MP Ali Wanees for questioning over allegations he committed an obscene act with a young woman on an agricultural road in Tokh.

Wanees, a Salafi Asala Party member of the dissolved People's Assembly, has denied the allegations.

Earlier this month, police said they apprehended him in an indecent situation in Qalyubiya Governorate. Wanees is also accused of assaulting a police officer during the incident.

The woman allegedly in his car, Nesrine Ramadan Abdel Aaty, is being detained pending investigations. The Banha University agriculture student from the village of Moshtohor told investigators that she went to see Wanees to borrow money for a friend.

Wanees told the people of his legislative constituency in a statement after Friday prayers on 8 June that "this was an attempt to distort his image and defame him."

The Banha prosecutor ordered his arrest upon receiving word from the People’s Assembly General Secretariat that the MP's legal immunity had ended with the dissolution of the assembly.
