Bob Bradley to remain at Egypt’s helm.

CAIRO: Bob Bradley remains a Pharaoh. At least the manager of the Egyptian national team through the North African country’s quest for a third-ever berth in football’s biggest stage, the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The Egyptian Football Federation (EFA) on Tuesday said they would retain Bradley through the qualification phase despite Egypt being knocked out the 2013 African Cup of Nations over the weekend, the second straight time the 7-time continental champions won’t be appearing.

Following Central African Republic’s shock victory in the home and home playoff, speculation had surfaced that Bradley could be on his way out.

However, the EFA remains strong in their optimism that Bradley can lead the Pharaohs to Brazil in two years’ time. Already, Egypt has won their first two qualifiers and Bradley has said he hopes to build on those successes.

The next round of matches for qualifying will occur in March, with Egypt atop their group on 6 points. They will host Zimbabwe.

Egypt has little to celebrate after crashing out of CAN qualification.

CAIRO: Even Egypt’s new coach, American Bob Bradley, could not muster the will for the Pharaohs to overcome lowly Central African Republic on Saturday for a berth in the next African Cup of Nations. Missed opportunities were the main reason for Egypt’s 1-1 draw away, costing them a spot in next year’s CAN.

Central African Republic scored first in Bangui through Foxi Kethevoama’s 23rd-minute header and held on for a 1-1 draw in the second leg to move one tie away from reaching a major tournament for the first time.

Emad Meteb was able to equalize in the 72nd from close range for the Egyptians, but a number of failures on the attacking side doomed the Egyptians.

Despite the loss, the country remains on track for a berth in the next World Cup, having won their first two matches.

But the loss has put Bradley’s job in jeopardy, less than one year since he took the reigns of the Egyptian national team after being let go by the American national squad following a 4-2 defeat by Mexico in the Gold Cup little over a year ago.

The Egyptians created a host of goalscoring opportunities on an uneven pitch against the Central Africans but crucially couldn’t capitalize.

“I think our ideas in attack were good,” Bradley said. “Obviously the execution of certain opportunities … wasn’t everything it needed to be. We only scored one goal when we needed to score three.”

Record seven-time champions Egypt will miss consecutive Africa Cup of Nations tournaments for the first time since 1968 after being held to a 1-1 draw in the Central African Republic Saturday.

Stunned 3-2 at home in a delayed first leg played behind closed doors two weeks ago, the Egyptian team fell behind midway through the first half in Bangui when captain Foxi Kethevoama scored.

Veteran striker Emad Moteab, one of four players brought into the side by American coach Bob Bradley after the Alexandria debacle, levelled late in the second half, but the visitors never looked like scoring the other two goals they needed to salvage the tie.

After winning a record three titles on the trot between 2006 and 2010, Egypt finished last behind Niger, South Africa and Sierra Leone in a 2012 qualifying group.

Now they have fallen at the first hurdle on the road to the 2013 finals in South Africa after starting as strong favourites to eliminate opponents 14 places lower on the FIFA Africa rankings.

While the cancellation of the domestic league after 74 fans died in riots after a game in Port Said on February 1 robbed Egyptian players of match practice, it has given Bradley more time than usual with the national squad.

Central African Republic, who have never come close to qualifying for African football's showpiece, will join 29 other countries for a final-round qualifying draw on July 5 in Johannesburg.

The exit of Egypt means Morocco will be among the 15 seeded teams for the draw at a hotel cafe near OR Tambo international airport while the Central African Republic are one of the unseeded sides.

Defending champions Zambia head the list of seeded countries which includes Algeria, Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, Sudan, Tunisia.

The unseeded countries are Botswana, Cape Verde Islands, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Liberia, Libya, Malawi, Mozambique, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo, Uganda and Zimbabwe..

Kazakhstan-based Kethevoama, one of two brothers in the Wild Beasts squad, headed home a Romaric Lignanzi cross on 24 minutes before a capacity 20,000 crowd crammed into the Barthelemy Boganda Stadium.

The Moteab equaliser left Egypt needing to score twice more under the away goal rule to squeeze through, but the home defence held firm for a famous triumph.

Bradley blames weariness for shocking defeat on Friday.

CAIRO: Egypt’s national football team manager Bob Bradley said his squad’s shocking loss on Friday to Central African Republic in an African Cup of Nations qualifier was the result of “weariness” and “poor passing.”

Egypt, which struck first at home, could not fend off a 10-man Central African Republic squad, who fought back to win 3-2, in a match played before no fans in Cairo as a result of the security situation following an attack on fans in Port Said that left at least 75 people dead in February.

Egypt will now need a two goal victory in Central African Republic on June 30 to continue their hopes to qualify for the 2013 tournament.

“My players were exhausted after the clash with Guinea only five days ago,” former US coach Bradley told reporters after what many say is arguably the biggest upset in Cup of Nations qualifying history.

“I did not expect that performance at all. We had many faults during the game, but this display is not a true reflection of our team as we played much better this month in the World Cup qualifiers.

“This defeat is a harsh lesson for me and my players not to underestimate any opponent,” said the coach, who took over the Pharaohs last year when long-serving Hassan Shehata quit after failing to qualify for the 2012 African finals.

“Our passing was not sharp enough with two of the Central African Republic goals coming when we unnecessarily lost possession. Our defending also left much to be desired.

“I saw a lot of things tonight that made me unhappy and we need to analyze this match thoroughly so that to improve ahead of the return match later this month.”

Egypt still remains on track for its more important berth in the 2014 World Cup Finals in Brazil after two victories.

Egypt football fans were not present on Friday night for the match.

CAIRO: A goal from Mohamed Zidan in the 10th minute appeared to start the night off just where Egypt left their last match, but the Central African Republic stormed back to equalize only 15 minutes later en route to a stunning 3-2 victory over the Pharaohs in Cairo on Friday evening.

Egypt squandered an early lead in its home leg to face a stiff challenge in the second leg of the knockout tie in two weeks.

Egypt was in control when defender Salif Keita was sent off in the 35th after a second yellow card and Mohamed Salah restored the home team’s lead early in the second half.

The Central African country was not to be denied, even down a man, and they hit back in a seven-minute spell in the middle of the second.

Momi scored again after being left unmarked at the far post, and David Manga grabbed the winner in the 69th from just inside the area.

It ended Egypt’s 13-match unbeaten run in 2012 and slowed its recent upsurge under former US national team coach Bob Bradley after the 7-time African champions surprisingly missing out on this year’s African Cup of Nations.

It was just Egypt’s second international at home since a riot at a league game in Port Said in February left at least 75 people dead.

The first-leg game was suspended from February after those riots in Port Said and was also brought forward from the weekend so as not to clash with the presidential election runoff.

Egypt football fans.

CAIRO: Egyptian authorities are refusing to provide security for an African Cup of Nations qualifier against Central African Republic slated for June 17 in the country.

The country’s Football Association has asked the Confederation of African Football to postpone the match for 48 hours in order to avoid playing the match as Egyptians head to the polls to vote in a presidential run-off, set for the same day.

Egypt has played only one home match this year, and the domestic league was canceled after fans in Port Said attacked the opposing team’s supporters in February, which left at least 75 people dead.

Security present at that match remained still, allowing the violence to escalate, leaving the country shocked at the violence.

The team’s administrative manager Amr Abu el-Ezz says the continental body has not yet replied to the request.

The ruling military junta has refused to provide security for the national team’s matches in the country, despite the widespread criticism that followed the Port Said incident.

Egypt won its initial World Cup qualifier against Mozambique 2-0 last weekend.

Fugitive rebel warlord Joseph Kony is operating in volatile border areas between Sudan and South Sudan, as well as the Central African Republic, Uganda's army chief said Monday.

Kony, originally from Uganda, is based in remote regions between CAR, South Sudan's Western Bahr el-Ghazal state and Sudan's South Darfur state, said Aronda Nyakairima, Uganda's chief of defense forces.

"The last intelligence that they got from someone who surrendered indicated that Kony was somewhere in western Bahr-el-Ghazal at a point where the triangular borders meet," Nyakairima said.

Uganda is leading an African Union force in the hunt for the head of the Lord's Resistance Army rebels, a force notorious for a grim campaign of rape, mutilation and murder.

The AU force — supported by US special forces — is mandated to hunt Kony across Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic and South Sudan, but does not have permission to cross into Sudan's territory.

Nyakairima said that Khartoum had armed the LRA and given the brutal rebel group sanctuary prior to 2002, a move widely seen as retaliation for Uganda's backing of southern rebels battling the Sudanese government.

However, Nyakairima said that although new uniforms of the Sudanese Armed Forces had been discovered with the rebels, there was no concrete proof Khartoum was still supporting or arming the LRA.

"We know that area has Khartoum forces deployed in Southern Darfur. … We have not come across a rifle or a bomb, but certainly we came across brand new uniforms," Nyakairima said.

However, the uniforms could have been stolen or taken from dead soldiers, Nyakairima added.

The border between Sudan and South Sudan is un-demarcated, a remote area where several armed groups are believed to operate, including both Sudanese Darfur rebels fighting the government and pro-Khartoum militia forces.

Kony, wanted by the International Criminal Court on war crimes charges, drew world attention last month after an Internet film by US-based advocacy group Invisible Children calling for him to be caught was watched by tens of millions of people.

Sudan on Sunday declared a state of emergency along its border with South Sudan after month-long border clashes.
