Former presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq respects the rights of the demonstrators planning tomorrow’s 24 August protests, and plans to return to the political arena in the near future, the former prime minister told Al-Masry Al-Youm on Thursday.

In a statement released today by his campaign office, Shafiq said he had chosen to stay away from political life during the current period for personal reasons.

Shafiq's statements come hours before demonstrations called for by political parties and figures on Friday demanding the dissolution of the Muslim Brotherhood and the ouster of President Mohamed Morsy.

Shafiq said that he intends to continue working for reform through a political party he is working on establishing.

The Shafiq campaign announced it will not take part in the demonstrations against the Muslim Brotherhood. Shafiq's presidential campaign spokesperson, Ahmed Sarhan, said that the campaign respects results of June’s election.

The district prosecutor in the governorate of Minya, Upper Egypt referred six members of the Freedom and Justice Party to trial on charges of vandalizing Ahmed Shafiq’s local campaign office.

The court would begin hearing the case on 2 September.

The incident took place on 18 June when supporters of President Mohamed Morsy took to the street in Al-Edwa City to celebrate preliminary reports in the 16-17 June runoff election that showed Morsy in the lead.

The FJP members allegedly stormed Shafiq’s campaign office, assaulted two officials and vandalized one car.

A number of Shafiq campaign offices were broken into and set on fire in Cairo and other governorates during protests that erupted days before the presidential runoff.

Protesters had demanded that the Political Isolation Law be put into effect against Shafiq, Hosni Mubarak’s last prime minister, in order to disqualify him from the race.

The Hurghada office of the presidential campaign of Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsy caught fire Tuesday due to a short circuit.

Investigations by Hurghada's security authorities said that the fire destroyed all the office's contents before a firefighting brigade managed to put it out, preventing the blaze from extending to nearby shops and bus stops.

Strong winds helped the fire spread more quickly, according to the investigations.

Initial losses from the damage have been estimated at approximately LE20,000.
