President Mohamed Morsy on Sunday warned those who threatened Egypt’s security “not to be fooled” by his “patience.”
“Some still think that our eyes are not wide open,” said Morsy on Twitter. “But do not be deceived by my forbearance, for this matter concerns our homeland which we will spare no effort to protect.”
Three policemen were killed and a fourth injured in an armed attack on a police car in Arish on Friday. Security sources said unknown armed men attacked the car and shot fire at the passengers inside before fleeing. The reason for the attack was not clear.
Additionally, residents seized control Saturday of the North Sinai Governorate headquarters in Arish, demanding the governor’s resignation.
Mossad Abu Fagr, an activist, said on Twitter, “The demands of the revolutionaries of Sinai are the removal of the governor and the appointment of a panel of 25 individuals from among the revolutionaries to run the governorate until a new governor is elected.”
“All the revolutionaries throughout Sinai should head to the governorate headquarters in Arish. The vanguards now control the governorate headquarters,” Abu Fagr added.
Unknown armed men who belong to a Bedouin tribe also attacked a police station in Nakhl City on Saturday to release an imprisoned relative of theirs.
“Egypt is going through a difficult period,” Morsy said, adding that the country is moving from a stage in which it was steeped in persecution to one with development, stability and social justice.
“I will not allow any intellectual or cultural currents to tamper with the country’s resources or change its identity and the fact that it belongs to the Arab and Islamic worlds,” he added.

A policeman and a gunman were both killed Monday in gunfight between two armed men and security forces in the town of Arish, North Sinai, security sources said.
The sources said two gunmen were riding a motorcycle and carrying automatic weapons. They passed by a vehicle belonging to the mail service that carried money.
Security forces in charge of securing the vehicle asked the gunmen to stop after suspecting they were trying to rob the vehicle.
An exchange of gunfire took place between the two sides, killing a police officer and an armed man.
The security sources denied that the armed men intended to rob a bank, as initial reports suggested, stressing that although the incident occurred near a branch of a government bank, the bank itself was not the target.

A group of armed men opened fire on Monday at a checkpoint in Arish in Egypt's Sinai peninsula, but the attack did not cause deaths or injuries, a security source said.
A similar incident took place on Sunday when two men in a four-wheel-drive vehicle opened fire on a police station in the city. Police fired back but the men escaped, the source said.
The military launched an operation against militants in the area after the killing of 16 Egyptian border guards on 5 August.
Disorder has been spreading in North Sinai, a region awash with guns that feels neglected by the central government since the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak last year in a popular uprising. Mubarak's government had worked closely with Israel to secure the border region.

Armed men attacked UN peacekeeping troops and several Egyptian army checkpoints, and three Egyptian soldiers were killed in a car chase during a new spate of violence in Sinai Sunday.
The Al-Ahram website reported that armed men fired on a checkpoint near the eastern entrance to Sheikh Zuwayed, on the Rafah-Arish international road. Eight armed men fired on another army position on the Arish-Ouja road. Eyewitnesses said army forces exchanged fire with the assailants before they fled into a nearby mountainous area after reinforcements arrived. Army forces and residents combed the area in search of the suspects.
Three soldiers were also killed and four security officers were injured when a police car overturned while chasing suspected criminals on the international road in central Sinai. It is unclear whether or not the police car was chasing suspecting assailants in the attacks.
Additionally, a group of armed men opened fire on UN peacekeeping troops near the border with Israel Sunday, according to state-run news agency MENA.
The latest round of violence comes days after the start of a military operation in the area against militants suspected of being behind a bloody attack that killed 16 Egyptian troops last Sunday.
Egypt sent hundreds of troops and armored vehicles into northern Sinai on Thursday to tackle militants operating near the border in an offensive that commanders said has so far killed 20 people.
The Egyptian army captured six people it considered "terrorists" in Sinai on Friday. A security source said three of them were later released.
Egyptian police clashed with armed men in northern Sinai's Arish, state television reported on Thursday, a day after security forces began a crackdown on Islamist militants in the region.
"Clashes resumed between armed men and police forces in front of police station number two in al-Arish," Nile News television reported, citing its correspondent there.
Masked gunmen had attacked seven army and police checkpoints in Arish early Wednesday morning.
The assaults came after the Sunday night attack on a checkpoint in Rafah near the Israeli border by gunmen believed to belong to extremist Islamic groups, killing 16 Egyptian soldiers.
Egyptian military and security forces strengthened their presence in Sinai after the incident and carried out a military campaign Wednesday morning that officials said killed 20 militants, according to Reuters.
