The Egyptian Consulate in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah ended a half-day sit-in of 4000 Egyptian workers at Jeddah Airport late Wednesday. The Egyptian airport workers were protesting a Saudi citizen who slapped his Egyptian colleague, causing a brawl between the workers and airport security and the arrest of four of the Egyptian workers.

Egyptian Consul Adel al-Alfy sent a delegation to the airport on Wednesday afternoon to address the situation, according to Egypt's state-run Al-Ahram newspaper. The delegation's visit resulted in the Saudi worker apologizing to his Egyptian colleague. Airport security then released the four detained Egyptian workers.

The Egyptian Republican Guard would be responsible for securing Emir of Qatar Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, his wife, and their accompanying delegation, which includes three ministers and 61 public figures, to the Gaza Strip through the Rafah crossing, a senior security source said Monday.

Sinai activist Mosaad Abu Fagr wrote earlier on Facebook that the Qatari Emiri Guard would be responsible for security on both the Egyptian and the Palestinian sides.

The Turkish Anadolu news agency also said that security affiliated with the Egyptian presidency on Sunday took over the security of the airport and the crossing, and that the local authorities, the media and the tribal elders were notified that the presidency is responsible for the arrangements of the visit.

Sheikh Thani is arriving Tuesday morning to Arish Airport, which underwent a complete renovation in preparation for his visit. Twelve buses carrying equipment have already arrived at the crossing, Anadolu said, and a Qatari plane landed at the airport on Sunday.

Airport security refused to divulge the identity of the passengers or the type of equipment, however.

The Emir and his wife are scheduled to board an Egyptian helicopter to the crossing, then take a motorcade to spend six hours in Gaza before they return to Doha.

On the Palestinian side, Hamas ordered the municipalities to clean the streets and place banners welcoming the Emir and his wife.

Sheikh Thani and Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh will hold a press conference, then go to the city of Khan Younis in the south to inaugurate Hamad City, which cost around US$62 million, part of US$254 million Doha allocated to the reconstruction of the enclave and the Hamad Hospital for Artificial Limbs for Children.

The Emir is the first Arab head of state to visit the Gaza Strip since 2007.

Israel called the visit “strange,” and preempted it with raids on Gaza that resulted in the death of two Palestinians and the wounding of four others.

A 10-year-old passed the security gates of Cairo International Airport without being stopped or questioned, took a shuttle bus across the tarmac and boarded a plane without a ticket on Thursday.

The air hostess of the Gulf Air that was headed to Bahrain returned the boy to the authorities, who upon questioning found that his name was Mohamed Sabry and that he lives in Ain Shams, an area close to the airport. He said he wanted to watch the planes.

The authorities summoned his father and asked him to make sure this does not happen again.

Two Umra pilgrims on Thursday filed a complaint with the military prosecutor against the honor guards of military leader Hussein Tantawi, accusing the guards of assaulting them at Cairo airport on Sunday evening.

Early investigations by airport security revealed that Brigadier General Essam Gharib Ahmed received a phone call from his brother, who was returning on the same plane as the two pilgrims, brothers Mostafa and Yehia Mahmoud. Ahmed’s brother alleged that the two caused him to fall down the airplane entry ramp while he was boarding the plane, and asked Ahmed to wait for their arrival and teach them a lesson.

Kamal Suleiman, the lawyer for the two brothers, told Al-Masry Al-Youm Thursday that the two filed a complaint with the Defense Ministry with details of the incident and have demanded Ahmed be interrogated. The ministry then referred the complaint to the military prosecutor.

He added that seven guards waited for his clients at the airport, and insulted and beat them. The complaint has been referred to the military prosecution for investigation, Suleiman said, noting that airport surveillance cameras recorded the assault.

Sources familiar with the situation said the military and airport security were able to reconcile after the military apologized on behalf of the honor guards.

A security official at Cairo airport on Monday said that Air Sinai allowed a diplomat accompanying the Israeli ambassador to Egypt, Yaakov Amitai, to board a plane from Tel Aviv carrying a weapon.

“According to international aviation regulations, the weapon should have been placed in the cargo compartment and later handed over to the passenger upon arrival,” said airport security director Salah Zeyada, describing the incident as “a big mistake.”

Zeyada also said that carrying a weapon on board a plane and inside an airport terminal is a serious matter. Customs seized the weapon upon the arrival of the diplomat Sunday to match it with its license.

Last month, the London-based Arabic language newspaper Al-Hayat reported that Amitai demanded that Egyptian authorities tighten his personal security out of fear of attacks similar to those carried out against Israeli diplomats in India, Georgia and Thailand.

On 13 and 14 February attackers in India, Georgia and Thailand targeted Israeli diplomats with so-called “sticky” bombs that attach magnetically to vehicles.

Al-Arabiya news website, based in Dubai, said Thursday that security forces at Cairo International Airport mixed up the identities of Al-Qaeda leader Seif al-Adl and Egyptian Salafi jihadist Mohamed Ibrahim Makkawi after he was apprehended on Wednesday.

Makkawi was released after questioning, state-run news service MENA reported.

Airport security said they apprehended the suspect after he came from Pakistan via the United Arab Emirates and was transferred to state security prosecution for investigation.

Egyptian authorities believed Makkawi was Adl and thus arrested him, a security source told Al-Arabiya.

Makkawi said in a public statement on Wednesday that his only link with Al-Qaeda was a friendship with Osama bin Laden that ended years ago.

“I was not convinced by the ideas of Al-Qaeda, because I feel that it is US-made,” he added. “I have not been involved in any of the attacks launched by the group in any part of the world during the years I spent in Pakistan and Afghanistan.”

Independent Youm7 said that Makkawi decided to come back to Egypt to clear his name after realizing he had been confused with Adl. The Egyptian Embassy in Pakistan issued documents allowing him to enter the country based on his request, he said.

The US has set US$5 million in reward to whoever can lead to the capture of Seif al-Adl, who is believed to have been involved in the 11 September 2001 attacks.
